Oliver Ellis is a multidisciplinary artist based in Eora/Sydney, his current work employs a metamodernist approach to painting. By combining symbolism and ornamentation with candid photography he creates visual analogies with the purpose of debasing mythology and romanticism. Ambiguity is central to Oliver’s work, the use of unconventional methods and materials serve to challenge perception and create illusions that are oftentimes intentionally transparent. Oliver’s work acknowledges that symbols have the ability to communicate non-verbal information, he explores the extent in which this semiotic transmission can be interrupted in order to highlight formal qualities and counteract their banality.
