Alexia Fisher is a sculpture and installation artist working conceptually with semiotics to engage emotions from her lived experiences. Fisher's hand-formed ceramic objects capture complex feelings that coexist and contradict, fleshing out the familiar and uncomfortable. Embodiment is key to her practice as she privately re-enacts physical gestures once inflicted on her own body, into the clay. Without the use of tools, she makes these impressions through actions such as squeezing, groping, pulling, scratching, and biting. The type of clay is chosen to enhance or repel the physical action being embedded. Experimenting with the technical order results in sculptures that mix raw, bisque, slip, glazed and recycled clay in various permutations. The texture and surface treatment carry allusions to bodily parts, evoking an affective response. Her miniature or life size ceramics play with the psychology behind these diametric encounters. Fisher's works encourage physical interaction, seducing the senses as they: move, make sounds, glow, or even simply ask to be held. This captures her intention to break with traditional notions of the fragile, decorative object, bound to the mantle.
