Diaan Vitnell practices underneath the moniker Dumbitchdiaan. Their practice is an interchanging conversation within the framework of past collective experiences with the object. Dumbitchdiaan produces an amalgamation of sculptures, persona and performance. These works emerge when the Dumbitch feels discord in the relationship between objects and bodies.
The objects are typically collected from roadsides and discarded piles. They were once used to house and hold bodies; mattress, chairs, etc. The moment that the Dumbitch meets the object there is an emotional pull towards it. There is a visceral feeling, a connection between their body and the body of the object. An exchange occurs whilst making the work; Dumbitch recognises the collective narratives shared by the objects.
With a persona, follows the performance. The Dumbitch is continually performing under other eyes. The body becomes one with the object. One individual cannot be enough though. It has transformed from one's experience of the world, into a collective. As a community we move, in unison and out of sync, our harmony sung through discord. Our little secret only whispered in words that came in a pant.
Under the burning gaze of peers, will I stretch and fold? or be humbled as I'm told?
