Nicola Schubert is an Australian multidisciplinary artist whose work is forged by a diverse array of themes, concepts and interests. Nicola’s practice heavily focuses on pushing material boundaries, with her current practice focusing on the materiality of aluminium foil. Her utilisation of foil ambiguously merges emotional notions of perfectionism and control juxtaposed with more calming emotions such as serenity and meditative states. Schubert seeks out hidden interpretations in material surfaces; in this case, the foil’s surface embodies both emotive aspects, with its unpredictable creases and distortions, while also capturing the reflective and meditative qualities reminiscent of the ocean. Within her practice, Nicola’s work uses text to further introduce a theoretical layer of philosophical ideology, often referencing both Marxist and Kantian ideas and bridging them into the contemporary space.
