Shaunagh Ashby is a contemporary Australian artist based on Cammeraygal land in Sydney. Her multidisciplinary practice explores the interactions of light, space and movement using vibrant colour and dynamic compositional form. Expanding on the genre of geometric abstraction in the contemporary sphere, her interest in fractal and colour theories has generated a sculptural and painterly artistic language of vivid non orthogonal and triangular forms. The shapes, their proportional relationship and their assemblage determine how light is reflected through the work. Her palate explores the visual energy and tension between colours and the emotional response this provokes.
Drawing on her architectural background, Shaunagh was influenced by the movement created by the abstract forms in the Sydney Opera House. Utzon’s inspiration was the naturally occurring triangulation in tree canopies. These geometries are the residue of a system of self-organisation known as fractals: a fractal being a type of non-linear equation which loops back into itself, forming a continuous self-similar pattern. Using rigid cardboard as a substrate, the imperfect nature of the exposed edges contradicts the purity of geometric abstraction exploring a contemporary dialogue about what is hidden and revealed and the ephemeral nature of all things.
