Scarlett creates oddities, forming and combining organisms to construct her own species of creatures. These creatures come to life after experiencing, documenting, and collecting elements from nature.
Setting out, Scarlett zooms in through a photographic lens, capturing microscopic elements; the tepal of a grevillea or the tentacles of a sea anemone. Simultaneously there is a physical process of collecting happening in nature and at second-hand shops, gathering and categorising organic, textile and unique objects. These acts are essential to the creation of Scarlett’s creatures. The collected segments of nature and found objects are stitched and glued together, with attention to detail, creating a creature of the unknown that retains the truth of nature.
Through these creatures, she creates a sense of wonder, confusion, recognition, investigation. Are they real? Have they been seen before? Scarlett is often in an ongoing state of daydreaming, continuously creating this sense of being in an un-real world of wonder.
