Collection: Mary Stack

Working within the tradition of still life, Mary paints familiar objects to examine the nature of perception and convey a sense of order. Her work combines formal and conceptual elements and reflects a close observation and attention to detail. Building up the surface with layers of translucent oil paint achieves a sense of depth and luminosity. Her recent work has explored the concept of the fold while her latest series considers the history of trompe-l'œil and its interplay with the grid. The choice of simple objects reinforces the order represented by the grid, while the contrast between flatness and volume introduces a level of ambiguity.
