Growing up in Darlinghurst and the Cross in the 70s was, in those days very bohemian; attracting artists writers and other eccentrics including artists like my parents. All this shaped my understanding of the world. I lived in various warehouses and squats with other artists. We were always frequenting galleries, and following performances and events, creating a backdrop for many future creative endeavours.
Incongruously, inspiration for my ceramics lies in the Australian bush and natural landscape. The profiles of hills and rock formations inform the forms and surfaces for my hand-built vessels and wheel-formed bowls. I use a variety of darker clays and abstracted glazes. This reminiscence of landscape, forming the foundation of my work, comes from camping as a child and visiting Mr (Ian) Fairweather at his studio hut on Bribie Island with my photographer father.
I have always loved the making process, whether it was prop making or sewing, painting, drawing and exploring materials to resolve creative outcomes. Inspiration comes to me in surface texture and form.
