Collection: Grace Halphen
@fabgrak
Working exclusively with unprimed cotton canvas, Grace Halphen’s practice is largely material and process oriented. Halphen unweaves the canvas, rendering the once self-supported form to a functionless and vulnerable collection of thread. Part of this thread is then rewoven and tied, but the majority is left untouched. Through this timely process, Halphen aims to investigate the lasting impact of trauma, and reconcile with her own experience of it. Trauma and pain or discomfort are ubiquitous. They can take up an enormous amount of space, but they do not always make themselves obviously visible. Halphen’s works are not grand spectacles, they simply exist as plain and functionless forms whose complexities are not made clear unless viewed closely.
