Janine Matthews is an emerging artist who lives and works in Sydney, Australia. Her work investigates the urban environment, with a particular focus on the inner-city suburbs of Sydney. Janine is a painter who works in a variety of paint media including oils, watercolours and egg tempera. Her subject matter is taken from direct observation of daily life and the urban environment. She is interested in the theme of the everyday, finding visual interest in the unnoticed details of what is often overlooked or ordinary. Recent work from 2023 includes the Window Series, in oil paint on canvas, and The Archive Drawings, which are in egg tempera on board. The Window Series takes its subject matter from the architectural setting of the National Art School and the local Darlinghurst area. The Archive Drawings are based on studies of the plaster casts held in the National Art School Archive Collection.
