Erica Nottage (b. Fukuoka) is a multidisciplinary artist working in the expanded field of painting and sculpture in Sydney. Her work merges the traditions of hard-edge abstraction, sacred geometry and her Japanese heritage. Nottage explores the poetics of simplicity (kanso : 簡素) while working with materials which speak to metaphysical ideas. This can range from natural materials to discarded objects from the urban landscape.
In "The Essence of Mystery," Nottage considers the Japanese rules of ikebena by contemplating the elements of line, colour and mass. She upcycles industrial sheets of Perspex to create biomorphic structures that are gentle and soft in character. These sculptures are transparent yet bound by gravity, contrasting the airborne lines of coloured thread. Inspired by the aesthetics of the Russian constructivists and the principles of Minimalism, she combines these intuitive Perspex models with lined, geometric triangles which extend into the gallery space. For Nottage, each line which expands "onwards and upwards" speaks to the expansion of consciousness.
Through a system of intuitive mathematics, Nottage's art reveals where she has been and where she will go. Her practice oscillates between the methodical and the experimental; a mental, physical and spiritual dance which is a practice of self-enquiry and introspection.
