Dominique Martinot is an Australian painter living and working in Kings Cross. Her large scale works utilise weaving and textiles to explore the grid. Her hand made weavings often depict iconography from the folk art of her Dutch heritage. Inspired by Anni Albers approach to abstract and geometric weavings, Martinot uses the inherent vertical and horizontal structure of the weave to explore the hand made gridded nature of weaving. She is exploring the idea of ornamentation within a contemporary context, linking back to the culture of pre-Christian Dutch folk art made for everyday use, aiming to create works with a pared down colour pallet to emphasise the texture and structure of weaving.
